The Jack Daniels souvenir trailer will be open for sales from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
The Jack Daniels distillery is a sponsor of the NASCAR car of Emporian Clint Bowyer and items available include mementos of Bowyer and the 07 car.
State spelling bee deadline is Monday
The first state of Kansas Senior Citizens Spelling Bee will be held at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 11 in Salina at the Bicentennial Center, 800 The Midway. Judges for the event will be Nancy Kassebaum Baker, retired U.S. Senator, Max Falkenstien, “the voice of the Kansas Jayhawks” and Josh Svaty, Kansas House of Representatives, according to a press release about the event.
The grand prize will be a trip for two to the National Senior Citizens Spelling Bee in June 2008 at Cheyenne, Wyo., to compete against contestants from other states.
The Spelling Bee is open to any Kansas resident who is 50 years or older by Monday. A $5 fee is payable in advance, with checks made out to the Salina Senior Center. Entry forms can be obtained at www.salhelp.org/aging/spelling bee or by calling (785) 827-9818. Entry forms are due Monday at the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth, Salina, KS 67401.
Veterans need help to see World War II Memorial
Thirteen Lyndon High School students are each escorting two World War II veterans to see the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Nov. 19-20. The boys need identifying veterans in the area who would like to make the trip, donations to cover expenses of the trip and assistance with planning the trip.

Open house at Melvern
Eisenhower State Park on Melvern Lake will be the host for an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 6. Visitors can see two new yurts, a bigger office, a remodeled campground, a colorful playground and more.
The Friends of Eisenhower State Park will serve homemade ice cream and park staff will answer questions. There will be no park entrance fee for the day.
4-H alumni to meet
The Lyon County 4-H Alumni and Friends annual meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Lyon County meeting room. The meal will cost $5 each person. To make reservations, call Barbara at 342-1040 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or (620) 443-5790 evenings or the weekend.
College info for girls
All girls in grades 9-12 are invited to learn more about the college application process with “College 101.” Meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 1200 Burlingame Road, with the next meeting on Oct. 8.
