ROCKY SLAYMAKER and Luke Koch who took part in the National Dry Stone Walling Competition. Slaymaker took first place for his wall’s foundation.
- Emporia High School gymnast Tarra Nichols, who won two gold medals in the Emporia High Invitational. She won the bars and the floor exercise competition.
- Jade Jenkins and Riverside 4-H Club. They raised money for a flag pole at the Miller Rural Fire Department. The money was raised by with a spaghetti supper and a fireworks stand.
- Michael Glass and Chelsi Kaiser, who were named homecoming king and queen at Northern Heights High School.
- The Jones Foundation, which announced a tuition voucher program to give all area high school seniors $1,000 to attend Emporia State University or the Flint Hills Technical College.
- Papa Murphy’s, which has applied for permits to open a new pizza store at 2326 Industrial Road. Papa Murphy’s, a take-and-bake store, is the fifth largest pizza chain in the country.
- ESU volleyball player Megan Koster, who as named the Sports Impact/AVCA National player of the week.
- The estate of Martha Kruse Furbur, who gave $1.875 million to ESU. This is the largest single gift ever given to the university. The money will be used for scholarships for the School of Library and Information Management. Furbur was a 1938 graduate of the library program at ESU.
