Manhattan takes 4-1 victory over EHS soccer team

Friday, September 28, 2007

Manhattan flexed its muscle a little Thursday night, defeating the Emporia High boys soccer team, 4-1.

Manhattan got on the scoreboard just 2 minutes into the game and rolled from there on the scoreboard despite a strong effort from the Spartans, coach Steve Pearson said.

“Sometimes you can do things right but you still can’t win,” Pearson said. “Manhattan hit the ground running and they never stopped. We played well but couldn’t answer their attack. It was just too strong.”

Manhattan cracked the scoreboard in the second minute when Chris Nechols found the back of the net on an unassisted shot. Nine minutes later, Rochie Potts Moore made it 2-0 when he scored off an assist from Aaron Appel.

Emporia’s Luis Guzman cut Manhattan’s lead in half just four minutes into the second half to make it 2-1, but Manhattan added goals from Grant Johannes and Appel to put the Spartans away.

Emporia fell to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial League, while Manhattan improved to 4-3-2. The Spartans are back in action on Monday when they take on Junction City at 6:30 p.m. at TRYSA.

Maryann Bennett picked up another top-10 individual finish for the Emporia High girls golf team Thursday at the Seaman Invitational in Topeka.

Bennett carded a 12-over 48 at the Village Greens golf course to finish in sixth place, just one stroke behind the fifth-place finisher, Lindsey Purcell of Washburn Rural. Rural’s Jerica Essman and Hayden’s Lauren Falley each carded the low score of the day at 4-over 40.

Emporia finished fifth out of eight teams, ending with a team score of 218. Emporia’s score was good enough to beat Silver Lake (224), Topeka West (256) and Topeka High (277). Hayden won the team title with a score of 186, followed by Rural (198), Jefferson West (203) and Seaman (209).
