Heights' Symmonds Takes 1st

Northern Heights senior Pete Symmonds edged out Marion’s Ryan Jones to take the individual title in the boys 5-kilometer race Thursday at the Council Grove Cross Country Invitational.

Symmonds finished in a time of 18 minute 9 seconds, beating Jones by 3 seconds. Heights’ Chris Seematter also produced a top-10 finish, placing sixth in a time of 18:41.

The two top-10 showings for Heights helped the Wildcats finish third as a team with 74 points behind champion Osage City (34) and runner-up Marion (60).

Other finishers for Heights included Justin Heston (23rd, 20:01), Brian Hultgren (27th, 20:16), Sean Edwards (30th, 20:25), D.J. Bronson (32nd, 20:29) and Tim Wymore (47th, 22:18).

Meanwhile, the Olpe girls took home the team title led by a second-place finish from Sharon Zeller, who ran a time of 17:41 on the 4K course.

Katelyn Henderson finished fourth (17:51), Nicole Wendling (19:05) and Kelsey Camien (19:14) came in 11th and 12th, respectively, and Adrian McCollum (19:28) placed 15th, giving the Olpe girls a team score of 35 points. Bennington placed second with 49 points.

The Olpe boys finished fourth as a team paced by Trey Stead’s ninth-place showing in a time of 19:03. Ethan Hall (14th, 19:08), Glenn Haag (18th, 19:35), Luke Miller (24th, 20:03) and Caleb Rathke (36th, 20:36) rounded out the Eagles’ scoring.

The Northern Heights girls did not field a full team, and are still without top runner Amy Lee, who is nursing an injury. Gesina Miller was the top finisher for the Heights girls, placing 25th in a time of 20:11. Bailey Ziegler (35th, 21:05) and Annie Adams (41th, 21:23) were the other finishers for Heights.

Lyndon volleyball

improves to 16-1

The Lyndon volleyball team continued its strong run on Tuesday, defeating Olpe (25-20, 25-22) and Burlingame (25-14, 25-8) on Senior Night.

In Match One, Stephanie Goetz paced the Lady Tigers with 10 kills. Cierra Clark and Krista Banzhaf added six kills apiece.

Cara Bolz also contributed 11 digs.

Against Burlingame, Goetz notched eight kills and three solo blocks, while Banzhaf had six kills and nine assists.

Lindsay Wigger posted seven assists.

Lyndon (16-1) travels to play in a tournament at Silver Lake this weekend.

Hartford volleyball loses pair

The Hartford volleyball was swept in a pair of matches Tuesday, losing to Lebo (25-12, 25-12) and Flinthills (25-17, 25-17).

In the first match, Amy Bolen led Hartford with three kills and two aces. Kellie Farr added two kills.

Against Flinthills, Farr had four kills, while Bolen contributed three. Jessica Wilson chipped in 40 sets.

Hartford dropped to 12-8 with the losses.
