With 80-degree temperatures on tap this weekend, there are plenty of opportunities get out and enjoy the fall temperatures in Emporia and the surrounding communities this weekend.
Saturday is packed with events in Hartford for the 17th annual Hartford Harvest Day. The events start bright and early in the morning at 6:30 to 9 a.m. for a biscuits and gravy feed at the Methodist Church in Hartford. All-day events include a car, truck and motorcycle show; quilt show; Kansas Museum of History and 4-H Exhibits at the high school; National Hunting and Fishing Day at the Flint Hills Wildlife Refuge Tent; local art and collections exhibits in the library; an antique tractor show, south of the high school; Lions Den and Desserts, next to Woody’s; and a climbing wall with the Kansas National Guard, north of the ball diamond.
Other events include:
- 7 a.m. — Registration begins for the 5K Fun Run/Walk in front of the firehouse.
- 8 a.m. — 5K Fun Run/Walk begins.
- 9 a.m. — Food and craft booths, in new community building and on Main Street.
- 10 a.m. — National Anthem sung by Amy Bolen; Parade “Royal Harvest.” Grand marshal is Theda Wolford
- 11 a.m. — Kids games by the car wash. Farmer’s Walk, east of the ball diamond.
- 11:30 a.m. — Little Mr. and Miss Hartford Harvest winner announced.
- 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Ham and bean dinner, small community building.
- 12 p.m. — 3 on 3 Basketball, park.
- 1 to 4 p.m. — Bingo at the College Building.
- 1 p.m. — Horseshoe pitching, next to the board office.
- 1:30 p.m. — Kids tractor pull (ages 4-12).
- 2 p.m. — Open mic for children 10 and under.
- 3 p.m. — Lawn mower races, next to ball diamond.
- 4 p.m. — Bed races, next to ball diamond.
- 4:30 p.m. — Talent show registration ends.
- 5 p.m. — Talent Show, Main Street; Celebration of marriage, commons area of high school.
- 4:30 to 7 p.m. — Evening barbecue by Neosho Rapids Community Projects.
- 8 p.m. — Street dance by “Pat Robinson.”

- After a Homecoming bonfire at 7 tonight at the Lyon County Fairgrounds, Emporia High School students and staff will continue festivities Friday with a parade in downtown Emporia to Welch Stadium, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Homecoming royalty will be crowned in a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the stadium, before the game between EHS and Shawnee Heights.
FBelinda Gail and Curly Musgrave, the 2006 Western Music Association Duo of the year, will return to Cottonwood Falls at 8 p.m. Friday at the Community Building in Cottonwood Falls. Gail was honored by the Western Music Association as the Female Performer of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and again in 2005. She was named Female Vocalist of the Year in 1999 and 2004. Musgrave was the Western Music Association’s Male Performer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 2002 and 2003 as well as Songwriter of the Year in 2004. He also was honored with the Academy of Western Artists Will Rogers Award in 2003 as Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. Tickets are $8 a person; $15 per couple. - Also in Cottonwood Falls on Friday: Head out to a vintage concert — an Old Timey Rock & Roll/Vintage Country Music performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls.
- The Emporia Farmers Market will start at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street parking lot.
- The William Allen White Children’s Book Awards will be held at ESU and the W.L. White Auditorium on Saturday. Three surviving crew members of the B-29 bomber WAW will visit the WAW historic home.
- Hetlinger Developmental Services will be paying 55 cents per pound of aluminum cans from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday. Free popcorn to all who come.
- Politics on the Porch will start at 2 p.m. Sunday at the William Allen White House State Historical Site.
