While there were few surprises in the team standings at the Centennial League girls golf championships Tuesday afternoon, Emporia High’s Maryann Bennett provided somewhat of a eye-opener with her round.
Bennett carded a 20-over 92 on nine holes at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course to finish seventh, just nine strokes back of the individual winner, Manhattan’s Mallorie Blanck (81).
“Maryann had a nice day,” EHS coach Rick Eckert said. “She looked really good out there.”
Fueled by Bennett’s top-10 finish and a personal-best round from Makenzie Harder, the Emporia High girls finished fourth as a team with a score of 445. Emporia’s total put it ahead of Seaman, Topeka West and Topeka High. Shawnee Heights did not field a full team.
As expected, Manhattan won the team title with a 351 team score, followed by Washburn Rural (363) and Hayden (409).
Harder finished her day in 21st place thanks to her shooting a best-ever 115. Rachael Clopton finished with a 118 and Hannah Watkins had a 120 to round out Emporia’s scoring. Melissa Heinitz carded a 130 while Seung-Yun Shin finished with a 153.
Emporia travels to Topeka on Thursday for the Seaman Invitational.
