Tag time for P, Q, R
Friday is the last day to renew vehicle registrations for people whose last names begin with the letters P, Q or R.
Those renewing will need to bring proof of insurance for all vehicles.
Motor Vehicle Department office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bookmark the contest
The Friends of the Emporia Public Library announce the eighth annual Bookmark Design Contest for all ages. Entry forms are being delivered to all area schools and are also available at the library and through its Web site at www.emporialibrary.org.
There are seven categories: preschool-kindergarten, grades 1-2, grades 3-4, grades 5-6, grades 7-8, grades 9-12 and adults, ages 18 and older. A winner will be selected in each category, with one “Friends Choice” winner also to be selected. Each winner will be honored and awarded a $25 cash gift at the Friends of the Library annual meeting on Jan. 6.
Entries can be made with colored pencils, markers or pens and should illustrate how one reads, learns or connects at the Emporia Public Library. Participants may submit multiple entries. Artists each should include a quote about why they like the library.
Winning designs will be reproduced in full color and distributed at the library every two weeks beginning in January. The deadline for entry in Oct. 31.
StartUp Kansas funds available
Emporia Main Street is eligible for StartUp Kansas financing, which was established to help NetWork Kansas Resource partners obtain supplemental capital financing for Kansas entrepreneurs in for-profit business startups and expansions in rural and distressed communities.
The StartUp Kansas Funding is provided in the form of matching grants or unsecured loans that match the terms of other financing provided by a NetWork Kansas Resource Partner working on behalf of the entrepreneur, according to information from Emporia Main Street.
As a NetWork Kansas resource partner, Emporia Main Street hopes to use the Incentives Without Walls and Trusler loan program in combination with the StartUp Kansas funds to create a vibrant business environment in the downtown district, a news release stated.

Taco talk at Rapids PTO
Bylaws and a taco supper will be on the agenda for the Neosho Rapids PTO meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the school library. Childcare will be provided.

Halloween decorating contest
The Neosho Rapids Community Projects committee is sponsoring a Halloween decorating contest for the Neosho Rapids area. Judging will be the evening of Oct. 16.
Prize money will be awarded for first, second and third places. People who live outside the city limits but want to participate may call 342-4313 to be included.
