The Emporia State volleyball team has gained some national recognition for its strong efforts last week.
Megan Koster was named the Sports Impact/AVCA National Player of the Week, and the Hornets jumped into the top 25 rankings in the latest AVCA poll.
Koster, a junior outside hitter, posted double-doubles against both No. 23 Rockhurst and No. 12 Pittsburg State last week.
The transfer from Hutchinson Community College had 13 kills and 10 digs against Rockhurst, then followed that with an 18-kill, 20-dig performance against PSU. For the week, she had a .348 attack percentage, averaging 5.17 kills, 5.0 digs and 5.67 points per match.
She is the first ever ESU volleyball player to earn the national honor.
Koster also took hitter of the week honors in the MIAA.
Joining her in the conference’s weekly awards was setter Ting Liu.
The freshman earned MIAA specialist of the week for the second straight time after averaging 17.5 assists in ESU’s two victories.
Her breakthrough performance came against PSU, as she notched 56 assists in a three-game win — the most by a Hornet in a three-game match since the NCAA went to the rally scoring system.
ESU debuted in the AVCA national rankings this week at No. 23. The Hornets received 95 points in the poll.
The Hornets (13-4, 3-1 MIAA) travel to face No. 7 Washburn (18-1) on Wednesday.
