Mother-daughter camp
The 23rd annual Girl Scout Mother-Daughter Camp will be held at Camp Wood the weekend of Oct. 5-6 for girls in first through third grades and Oct. 6-7 for girls in fourth through 12th grade. Events will include canoeing, archery, crafts, hiking, campfire fun and more. The final date to register is Monday. The fee varies depending on cabin selected. Registration forms are available online at www.gsflinthills.org or at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 1200 Burlingame Road. Girls do not need to to be Girl Scouts to attend. St. Mary’s reunion
Former employees of St. Mary’s Hospital are planning a reunion at noon Oct. 6 at the Best Western Regency Gardens restaurant, 3021 W. Highway 50. Organizers are asking $7 each for the event and guests are encouraged to bring a covered dish. A meat and cheese tray will be provided. Reservations may be made by calling Jeanette Schneider at 342-8863 or Pauline Sculley at 343-9198.
Appointed to board
Ron Whitney and Steve Harmon will continue to serve on the 16-member First District Service Academy Selection Board. The two Emporia veterans were reappointed by U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran to the board, which reviews applications and interviews candidates who are applying for admission to U.S. Service academies.
Whitney, a veteran of the Vietnam War, served in the U.S. Army until 1971 when he was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He is a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He is also active in Emporia’s All Veterans Tribute and the Flint Hills Optimist Club.
Harmon serves in the Kansas Army National guard with the rank of first sergeant. He is the director of the Business and Industry Center at the Flint Hills Technical College; president of the Emporia Main Street Association; and a member of the Hi-Noon Kiwanis Club.
