Emporia High tennis squads fare well at home invite

The Emporia High girls tennis team found some success Saturday playing host to the Emporia Invitational, as Emporia’s No. 1 squad finished fourth in the team standings while the Lady Spartans’ No. 2 squad finished fifth.
The No. 1 squad ended with 14 points to finish behind champion Olathe East (28), as well as Salina Central (27) and Hayden (16). Emporia’s No. 2 squad ended with 11 points, followed by Campus (10), Lawrence Free State (7) and Topeka High (3).
The No. 1 team picked up three fourth-place finishes.
At the No. 2 singles spot, Rose Nasrazadani opened the tournament with back-to-back 8-0 shutouts over Elise Barnett of Topeka High and Taylor Bottles of Campus. Nasrazadani lost her final two matches, however, falling to Salina Central’s Jordan Brown, 8-2, and Emporia’s Jessica Leon, 8-6.
Both doubles teams for the No. 1 EHS squad opened the tournament with a pair of victories before dropping the last two matches.
Sarak Watkins and Lauren Kitchens defeated Abby Holtz and Leah Curtis of Topeka High, 8-3, and Dani Burk and Kelsey Kenis of Campus, 8-4, while Erica Bennett and Sarah Dorsey picked up victories over Topeka High’s Yvonne Sanez and Kelly Dernell, 8-4, and Campus’ Meagan Anderson and Amanda Jones, 8-3.
At the No. 1 singles spot, Amanda Roberts finished in sixth place with a 1-3 record. Roberts’ one win came in her first match, an 8-7(8-6) victory over Mosy Kenefake of Topeka High.
For the No. 2 squad, Leon was the top finisher for EHS with a third-place finish at the No. 2 singles spot. Leon dropped her first three matches to opponents from Olathe East, Lawrence Free State and Hayden, but picked up her victory with an 8-6 win over Nasrazadani.
Whitney Page placed fourth at the No. 1 singles spot, picking up one victory — an 8-1 decision over Lawrence Free State’s Carly Fish.
In doubles action, Emporia’s No. 2 squad came away with a pair of seventh-place showings. The No. 1 doubles pair of Briana Alvarado and Tiffany Ma won their final match of the day with an 8-5 victory over Campus’ Dani Burk and Kelsey Kenis, while at the No. 2 doubles spot, Emporia’s Ashley Gitchel and Moelle Waters also picked up a victory in their final match — an 8-7(7-4) win over Kelly Dernell and Yvonne Sanez of Topeka High.
