The Emporia High gymnastics team came away with a fifth-place finish out of six teams Saturday at the Lawrence Free State Invitational.

Leading the way for Emporia High were All-Around competitors Tarra Nichols and Hayley Fry. Nichols finished 12th in the All-Around standings with a total score of 30.00, while Fry came in 13th with a score of 29.875.

Nichols’ top event came on the floor, as she scored a 7.9 to finish ninth individually. Fry, meanwhile, recorded a 10th-place finish on the beam with a score of 8.1.

Emporia’s top event as a team came on the vault, as all four EHS competitors provided strong efforts.

Nichols led the way with a score of 8.45, with Fry right behind her with an 8.4. Jamie Hollern scored an 8.0 and Haley Risley scored a 7.30.

Coach Barbara Clark said she was pleased with her team’s results on the vault, but added that her team needed to up its degree of difficulty in its routines.

“We did a great job with vault but again we need to try harder vaults if we want to move onto State,” Clark said. “We need to step up our routines and not settle with what we have.”

Overall, Shawnee Mission Northwest won the team title with a score of 102.55. Lawrence followed in second with a 101.225, followed by Newton (94.575), Lawrence Free State (93.50), Emporia (82.725) and Hutchinson (68.375).

EHS is back in action on Oct. 1 at an All-Around competition at Lawrence High School.
