NASCAR’S CLINT BOWYER put Emporia on the sports map Sunday by winning the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, his first Nextel Cup Series victory in nearly two seasons on the circuit. Emporians can see him on Oct. 1 when he brings his travel trailer to his native hometown.

F Patrons of Second City, the improv comedy troupe for the Emporia Arts Council’s annual fundraiser. If you get a chance before Saturday night, stop by the council, 618 Merchant St., to see its colorful “Interactions” display.

F Emporia State University’s football team secured a come-from-behind victory against Southwest Baptist during its home opener Saturday, making new head coach Garin Higgins only the second coach in ESU history to start his career with three victories.

F The Emporia High School cross country team again defeated No. 1-ranked and state defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas, this time at the Missouri Southern Stampede.

F The Emporia Farmer’s Market plans to remain in fine form through the end of October despite the closing of The Learning Connection, its sponsoring organization.

F Petticoat Junction in Lebo had scarcely turned on its gasoline pumps when it sold a $25,000 Texas Hold ’Em Kansas lottery ticket to father, Ivan, and daughter, Ivy Woods of Reading.

F The Kansas Children’s Service League plans to open an Emporia office and in the meantime brought its “Klicks for Kids,” photo exhibit to the Flinthills Mall through Wednesday, which helps match children in foster care with new adoptive parents.

F Emporia High’s Maryann Bennett took first place at the Topeka High girls golf invitational in Topeka. Fueled by Bennett’s individual victory, the Emporia High girls took third as a team, finishing behind champion Seaman and runner-up Topeka High.

F Emporian Marie Russell has volunteered pinning tacos for 33 out of the 34 annual Sacred Heart Mexican Suppers. Salud!
