EHS freshman team keeps record perfect

The Emporia freshman football team improved to 4-0 with a 38-16 victory over Topeka West on Thursday.

After trailing 8-0 at halftime, EHS got things going in the third quarter. The Spartans scored 32 straight points to take a 32-8 lead.

EHS added another touchdown in the fourth quarter before West scored its final TD.

EMS football takes down Lawrence South

The Emporia Middle School football team kept its undefeated mark at home with a 12-6 victory over Lawrence South on Thursday.

The Vikings controlled the game early, utilizing their running game to put together a scoring drive that took up the entire first quarter.

Emporia’s Austin Knight capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

The Cougars returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to tie the score at six, but EMS responded in the second half.

Knight added his second TD run of the day — this one at 51 yards — on the Vikings’ first play from scrimmage in the second half.

Knight finished the game with 15 carries for 135 yards.

Tim Eichler had six tackles for EMS, while Collin Thompsen and Derek Gifford each contributed five tackles. Derek Hartig added four tackles of his own.

EMS takes next week off before playing at Manhattan-Anthony on Oct. 4.

The EMS B-team also was victorious, outscoring Lawrence South 6-0 in the fifth quarter. Jerry Parks scored the only points on a 45-yard touchdown run.

Bryce Dakin, Christian Romero and Devin Walburn each contributed three tackles.

Northern Heights cross country runs well at Royal Valley

The Northern Heights boys cross country team had an impressive showing at Royal Valley on Thursday, finishing third out of six teams to earn team medals.

The Wildcats were led by Pete Symmonds, who took third in a time of 19:10.38. Chris Seemater was fifth (19:18.27), followed by Justin Heston (17th, 21:14.44), Brian Hultgren (19th, 21:37.50), Tim Wymore (22nd, 23:06.38) and Shawn Edwards (24th, 24:02.49).

Heights’ boys finished with 68 team points, putting them behind Cornerstone (43) and Royal Valley (47).

On the girls side, Gesina Miller had the best time for Heights, placing fourth with a time of 19:05.57.

Bailey Zeigler took sixth (19:25.01), while Annie Adams was 14th (20:52.07).
