‘Poetry on the Porch’

“Sundays in September” at the William Allen White House State Historic Site, 927 Exchange St., continues at 2 p.m. Sunday with “Poetry on the Porch,” featuring Kevin Rabas of the Emporia State University English Department reading poetry by White. Rabas also will be the host for contemporary local poets to read their works.

ESU Music

The ESU Department of Music presents the Gala Benefit Concert: Terry Everson, trumpet, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. The Habitat for Humanity Benefit Music Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church; the Jazz Ensemble Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $4. For more information, call 341-5431.

ESU Art

“New Directions,” an art exhibit by Robin Cole and Anthony Henderson, will go on display at the Eppink Gallery on Oct. 1. Cole and Henderson were displaced from their home by Hurricane Katrina and came to Emporia as “artists in residence” in Oct. 2006, staying for a month and working in the Kress Building. The show presents some of the directions that began during the residency, displaying paintings, drawings and sculpture. The show will run through Nov. 30. There will be an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 1 at the gallery.

‘Tosca’

Kansas Concert Opera will present “Tosca” by G. Puccini at 7:30 p.m. Sept 28 at the Lawrence Arts Center in Lawrence and at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 in Beach Hall on the ESU campus, 12th and Market St. Tickets at the door in Lawrence are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors; in Emporia, $10 and $5. Country in Cottonwood

Belinda Gail and Curly Musgave, the 2006 Western Music Association Duo of the Year, are returning to Cottonwood Falls. They will perform, beginning at 8 p.m. Sept. 28, at the Community Building. Gail has been named Female Performer of the Year several times by the Western Music Association and also won Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994 and 2004.

Musgrave is a multiple winner of the WMA Male Performer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. He also received the Academy of Western Artists Will Rogers award in 2003 as Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year.

Book group

The next book in the Kansas Connections: 2007 Book Discussion Series will be “A Breed Apart” by Max McCoy. Discussions will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. The Emporia Public Library’s fall story time theme for Pat-A-Cake Club and Mother Goose Time for the week of September 24th is “Fall Fun.”  Pat-A-Cake Club is held at 9:15 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for infants to 18 months. Mother Goose Time is held at 9:45 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for toddlers up to 36 months.    The theme for Emporia Public Library’s “Family Night @ the Library” on Tuesday, September 25th from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. is “Fall is Here!” Stories and other activities for families will be presented. No registration is required and families with children of all ages are welcome.

The Emporia Public Library Fall preschool story time theme for the week of September 24th is “Nuts About Fall.” Preschool story times for 2 to 5-year-olds are held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m., and on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
