Marie Russell probably can pin tacos in her sleep. She’s pinned tacos for 33 of the 34 annual Sacred Heart Mexican Suppers.
She resisted public acknowledgments of her volunteer service, which, of course, ensured that recognition was required.
Russell, a member of the Sacred Heart parish who grew up in Olpe, was one of about 20 people who made 9,000 tacos on Wednesday for Friday’s supper fundraiser. Proceeds, which raised about $25,000 last year, pays for teacher supplies and classroom materials for Sacred Heart School.
Frying of the pinned tacos begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. The supper will be served at 4:30 p.m. at the parish hall, 102 Exchange St. Tickets in advance are $6 and $7 at the door. Tickets also can be purchased at the school or at homes around town with yard signs advertising the supper.
The meal includes two tacos, rice, chips and cheese (nachos) and dessert. Carry-out will be available, also. Proceeds will be used to benefit the school.
Rolanda and Ray Root were deep into taco preparations on Wednesday. Ray Root and Kenny Schuler were frying 950 pounds of hamburger. Rolanda Root pinned tacos and moved finished batches to volunteers who bagged them for refrigeration.
“It’s quite an undertaking,” Root said. “But it’s exciting, too.”
