Hartford sweeps

2 matches at Hamilton

The Hartford volleyball team picked up a pair of big victories Tuesday in Hamilton, sweeping both the Kansas School for the Deaf and Hamilton.

Against KSD, it was Hartford’s serve game that propelled the Lady Jags to the 25-9, 25-13 victory, as Hartford tallied 13 service aces led by Christina Lee and Paige Hamman’s three apiece. Amber Schmidt had four kills on .500 hitting to lead Hartford.

In a 25-11, 25-7 win over Hamilton, the Lady Jags were led by Kim Darbro’s three kills, and again, Hartford was strong at the service line, tallying another 11 service aces.

With the pair of victories, Hartford improved its record to 12-6.

EMS Vikings down

Silver Lake, 16-14

The Emporia Middle School Vikings football team defeated Silver Lake last Thursday, 16-14.

The Vikings took the lead late in the first half with a 16-yard touchdown on a reverse from Derek Hardig to put Emporia on the board, taking an eight-point lead at the intermission.

EMS would not score again until the fourth quarter, when the Vikings went on a long drive capped by an Austin Knight touchdown run. That pushed the lead to 16-0.

Silver Lake answered with a touchdown and then recovered an onside kick, capitalizing on the momentum swing with a long pass to their tight end to set up their second touchdown of the day to pull to within two points at 16-14.

Emporia was unable to make a first down on the next drive and had to punt, but on Silver Lake’s final drive, Jerry Parks intercepted an errant pass, giving EMS possession of the ball, and Emporia ended the game with a kneel-down to secure the win.

Leading the Vikings defensively was Derek Gifford who had 13 tackles.
