Card shower

Former Emporian Naoma Finlay of Augusta will be the guest of honor at a reception and card shower from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Augusta to celebrate her 95th birthday. Cards may be sent to her at 53 Cottonwood Point, Augusta, KS 67010.

Sixth-graders collecting money for walk

Sixth-graders at Lowther North Intermediate School will begin collecting donations on Friday for the 17th annual “Walk to Be Drug-Free.” The walk also is a primary fundraiser for the school.

Students will actually conduct the walk on Oct. 5.

“This activity is an important community service for our students,” said Vicki Dinkel, sixth-grade teacher.

A percentage of the money raised will be donated to Emporians for Drug Awareness.

“Most importantly, this is a great opportunity for parents and community members to support our sixth-graders in their pledge to lead healthy, drug-free lives now and in the future,” Dinkel said.

Dear Reader: Items for “About Town” may be mailed to The Emporia Gazette, P.O. Drawer C, Emporia, KS 66801; e-mailed to newsroom@emporiagazette.com or faxed to 342-8108.
