The Kansas Children’s Service League expects to open soon an office in the annex of the Lyon County Courthouse, the organization’s first office in Emporia since 1996.
First, though, the nonprofit group hopes a photo exhibit, titled “Klicks for Kids,” now at the Flinthills Mall will match children in foster care with new adoptive parents. The exhibit stays up for a week, until Sept. 26.
“There is a tremendous need for adoptive parents both nationwide and here in Kansas,” said Beverly Long, program development manager for KCSL, who will lead the Emporia office, in a prepared statement. “Klicks for Kids is a wonderful opportunity to introduce adoption as well as some of the children who need forever families, to members of the Emporia community and Kansans across the state.”
The exhibit is a collaboration between KCSL and the Kansas Professional Photographers Association and consists of about 52 images. It draws attention to the 900 Kansas children in foster care who need adoptive homes.
The exhibit opened in November 2006 and, on while touring the state, has been seen in two dozen Kansas communities.
The Emporia office, Long said, plans to focus on recruitment and preparation of adoptive and foster families for the children served by KCSL. The group also is looking to expand services based on other needs in Emporia. The first KCSL office in Emporia opened in the early 1900s, followed by an office in the 1980s until the mid-1990s.
