The Emporia State soccer team battled to a scoreless tie for 62 minutes before faltering late, as Missouri Western put in three late goals to take a 3-0 victory Friday at St. Joseph, Missouri.
MWSU’s goals all came within an 11-minute time span.
Megan Sinclair started the scoring in the 63rd minute, finding the net on a shot from the right side after a cross from Desi Swanson.
Four minutes later, Jessica Martin blasted a shot over ESU keeper Megan Martin for a 2-0 lead, and Heather Schiemeier finished the scoring in the 74th minute with her second goal of the season.
ESU (0-6, 0-2 MIAA) lost despite outshooting MWSU 8-6 in the first half.
Alicia Smith led the Hornets with five shots — with four of those labeled as shots on goal.
Western (2-5, 1-1 MIAA) was finally able to pick up a conference win after going 0-13-1 in the MIAA last season.
The Hornets take on No. 15 Central Missouri at 7 tonight in Warrensburg, Mo.
