Top pick Oden

will miss entire season

PORTLAND, Ore. — Greg Oden’s rookie season with the Portland Trail Blazers ended before it started when the 7-footer had knee surgery.

The top pick in the June draft went in for an exploratory procedure on his right knee and ended up having microfracture surgery, which means he will sit out the season.

Dr. Don Roberts performed the surgery to repair the damage, which Pritchard described as the size of a fingertip. Oden is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Full recovery likely will take six to 12 months, the team said.

McLaren Formula One team hit with record

$100M fine

PARIS — Accused of using leaked secret data from its main rival Ferrari, the Formula One team McLaren was hit with a record $100 million fine by the World Motor Sport Council in the biggest scandal to hit auto racing’s premier circuit.

Although McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso escaped punishment, the espionage claims have rocked the sport and tainted McLaren’s lead in the drivers’ standings.

The team, also stripped of its constructors’ points, already was battling accusations that it had used team orders to decide which driver would win races this season. Now, it is facing a new crisis.

The case broke open in July when a 780-page technical dossier on Ferrari cars was found at the home of McLaren’s chief designer, Mike Coughlan, who later was suspended. Ferrari mechanic Nigel Stepney, who allegedly supplied the documents, was fired.
