United Way Prepares for new Fund Drive

Thursday, September 13, 2007

In less than a week, it will be time to start a new United Way campaign.

The United Way of the Flint Hills will kick off its 2007 fund drive on Wednesday, when organizers will announce this year’s goal and introduce a couple of the people who benefit from United Way support.

This time, the event will introduce Americus eighth-grader Colby Hayes and his “big brother” from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization.

“I thought it would be nice to have him and his big brother to speak about what they do together, and show the support of the United Way for these programs,” drive chair Larie Schoap said.

Twenty-seven “pacesetter” companies have been working for about a month to raise funds before the campaign’s official start. Traditionally, the United Way hopes to get at least half of its campaign goal from the pacesetters.

Last year’s campaign goal was $600,000. There were no new pacesetter companies this time, unlike last year when Fanestil joined the early birds.

“The pacesetter campaign has gone very well,” Schoap said. “We hope to have those figures together by the end of this week.”

The event begins at 11:45 a.m. in Webb Lecture Hall at Emporia State. The cost to attend is $10. For information or tickets, call the United Way at 342-7564.

Another fundraiser will happen later this month with a Sunday brunch on Sept. 30 at the Emporia State University Memorial Union’s Colonial Ballroom. It starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Food will be prepared by ESU chef Harold Jensen.

Tickets for the brunch, now in its second year, are $30 and may be picked up at the United Way office, the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, the Lyon County State Bank eastern location, The Emporia Gazette and the Skyline Room at ESU.

“That was a lot of fun for everyone last year,” Schoap said. “We hope to have even more this year.”
