A grant for the Lyon County Department of Corrections is ready to be finalized and submitted for consideration.
Robert Sullivan, community corrections director, presented Lyon County commissioners with some changes in the nearly $100,000 grant, which is based on Senate Bill 14 for risk reduction efforts in the Fifth Judicial District.
If awarded, the grant would allow Community Corrections to hire an intake officer, who would supervise every client for the first 40 to 60 days the client is on probation, as well as other staff.
Sullivan said he and his staff identified gaps between community corrections practices and evidence-based practices. The grant would allow the department to also add an employment specialist, who would focus on job placement and a cognitive-behavior specialist to look at the attitudes of offenders and address their thinking patterns.
Sullivan said the department won’t know about the grant application’s status until mid- to late-October.
“We’re very proud of this proposal,” Sullivan said. “We think it’s competitive...”

I sure hope all works out well for this grant. If we can just get people out of jail and into the community as productive workers, how much money would that save? Not to mention the social advantages of turning someones life around instead of them going into and out of jail all the time. Good luck!
