A Wichita man wrecked his van and received numerous tickets at the end of a high-speed chase that went from the Flying J restaurant to Sixth Avenue and Sunnyslope Street.
According to a report from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office, Deputy Garland Hendrickson was on routine traffic patrol on the west outskirts of Emporia when he pulled over a white van in the parking lot at Flying J. The van was going 78 mph in a 40 mph zone, the report stated.
Louis E. Pillay, 27, of Wichita allegedly drove off at a high rate of speed and headed east toward Emporia. The chase ended at Sunnyslope, where Pillay’s van reportedly struck a building. He was taken into custody and charged with felony eluding a police officer, aggravated battery, driving under the influence of an intoxicant, driving with a suspended driver’s license, reckless driving, fail to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving left of center.
Pillay and a passenger in the van, Jessica M. Cole of Wichita, 24, both were seen by Lyon County-Emporia Ambulance Service personnel. Both refused treatment.
Kansas Highway Patrol and Emporia Police assisted in the chase.
