A one-day blitz to secure supplies for the area Patriot Guard Riders unit brought in much of what was needed, but donations of merchandise and money still are being accepted.
Debi Fuller of Emporia, coordinator for the region, said that about half of the money needed to purchase flags has been donated, as well as about one-third of the 10-foot lengths of half-inch conduit needed to hold the 3’x5’ flags.
Fuller had asked this week for donations of flags and conduit, as well as 25 pieces of two-foot rebar, yellow ribbon for memorial bows, “O” rings to hold the ribbon on poles, zip ties and three large ice chests.
“Actually, we got four, so that’s great, “ Fuller said of the ice chests.
Bottled water also is still needed for the riders who will accompany the funeral procession and graveside service for Pvt. David J. Lane, who was killed Sept. 4 when a penetrator bomb device struck the Humvee in which he was patrolling in eastern Baghdad.
Fuller said that with enough donations, she will be able to purchase additional flags.
“If I order them all in one shot, we can get a substantial discount,” she said.
In the interim, units from outside the area will bring in their flags and poles for the Lane services.
Fuller said that Patriot Guards is a 501(c)(3) charity and contributions are tax-deductible.
Checks may be sent to Fuller at 413 Homewood St., Emporia KS 66801. For more information call Fuller at 340-7526.

It is a blessing that volunteers in the Patriot Guards are doing what they do. People like Fred Phelps and groupies are a disgrace to Americans (and humans in general). We should show respect for our soldiers that put their lives on the line so the rest of us may have freedom. Bless you Patriot Guards, keep up the faith and the good works.

What a moving sight it was as the Patriot Guard accompanied our soldier, David Lane along the streets of Emporia this morning. How wonderful it is to be able to depend on this group of volunteers as they provide this selfless and valuable service for our fallen warriors and their families. Bless them. I agree, lincoln, beasts like Fred Phelps and his group of traitorous demons do nothing except disgrace our country. No matter what our political opinions, we should honor our soldiers who serve to protect our freedoms.
