Harvey Girls lecture

Michaeline Chance-Reay of Kansas State University will present “Harvey Girls: It All Started in Topeka,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the large meeting room of the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave.

According to a news release, Fred Harvey, an English immigrant and self-established restaurateur of New York, traveled west opening many restaurants along the Santa Fe Railroad between the 1880s and the 1950s. Each was named Harvey House. A Harvey House was opened in Emporia in 1880.

Harvey Girls were recruited and trained to offer excellent service in the Harvey restaurants. In continuing the celebration of Emporia’s 150th birthday, the Flint Hills Genealogical Society, in cooperation with the Emporia Public Library and the Kansas Humanities Council, are inviting all those interested in this topic about local and Kansas history to “come and enjoy a piece of the past.”

Republican picnic

The Lyon County Republican Women will have a picnic beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Soden’s Grove park on South Commercial near the Cottonwood river.

Barbecued beef sandwiches, iced tea, lemonade and table service will be furnished. Those attending are to bring a salad, vegetable or dessert and lawn chairs. Those who are in the military or are veterans are invited.

Sen. James Barnett and Rep. Peggy Mast will be the speakers. Reservations are needed by Thursday. Call Maxine Horton at 342-7073.
