Emporia State goal keeper Megan Martin blocks a Washburn shot by Washburn Saturday afternoon at TRYSA. Martin had 16 saves in the Hornets’ 6-0 loss.

The Emporia State women’s soccer team couldn’t hang with No. 21 Washburn on Saturday, as the Lady Blues were dominant in a 6-0 victory at the TRYSA soccer fields.

Washburn — which was picked to win the MIAA this season — broke or tied 10 school records in the triumph.

“They’re a good team,” ESU coach Jim Schneiderhahn said. “That’s what we need to aspire to be.”

The Lady Blues also recorded a hat trick for the first time, as Jessica Mainz scored three goals and added an assist. The junior was the MIAA Most Valuable Player last year, earning the scoring title while also taking second-team All-American honors.

ESU trailed just 2-0 at the break despite primarily playing defense. In the first half, WU outshot ESU 25-0.

The Lady Blues (3-2-1) scored four goals during a 20-minute span in the second half, as Mainz and Danielle Ayala put in two each to make the score 6-0.

“We lost focus, and that’s probably, right now, the biggest thing that’s killing us this year,” Schneiderhahn said. “We lose focus too early on things we shouldn’t worry about.”

ESU was outshot 48-2.

One highlight for the Hornets was the play of goalkeeper Megan Martin. Though the score might not have indicated it, she performed well, posting 16 saves.

“It’s unlucky that she’s seeing so many shots right now,” Schneiderhahn said, “but she’s doing a very good job.”

ESU (0-5) plays a road game at Missouri Western on Friday.
