Missouri Western women’s basketball
investigating possible violations
Missouri Western has appointed an investigative team to review possible NCAA rules violations that occurred with its women’s basketball team.
The school is looking into the possibility that extra benefits were provided to former players during their careers.
“My overriding desire in this matter is to obtain a complete and unbiased review of the facts,” MWSU president James Scanlon said in a release, “so that the full truth is discovered.”
The University will have no further comment until after the investigation is completed.
EMS football drops game to Manhattan
The Emporia Middle School Vikings dropped their record to 1-1 after losing to Manhattan-Eisenhower, 22-0, Thursday afternoon. The Vikings knew they had their hands full in Manhattan when they faced the Eagles, as the Vikings have not won an A-Game at Eisenhower in the last seven years and the Eagles — who went undefeated last year — were looking to continue their winning ways.
The first half of play was a dogfight, with both teams struggling to move the ball. But the Vikings opened the second half with a series of unfortunate events.
After mishandling the kickoff, the Vikings failed to make a first down, putting themselves deep in their own territory. Following a bungled snap on the punt attempt, the Eagles took over from the Emporia 18-yard line which led to a quick Eagle touchdown.
The Emporia offense sputtered, managing only 23 total yards and two interceptions.
The Viking defense continued to play with aggression. Collin Thompsen was the top tackler with 10 stops and one quarterback sack. Austin Knight added eight tackles and Derek Hardig finished with seven.
However, the Eagles took advantage of penalties and missed assignments and managed to make up ground on several big offensive plays to mount another scoring drive late in the game. In the end, with 40 seconds left in the game and the Vikings trailing by 16 points, the Eagles scored one more touchdown to make the final score 22-0.
The B-Team bounced back from last week’s defeat with a rousing come-from-behind overtime victory over the Manhattan-Eisenhower B-Team 14-12. The Vikings sealed the win with a conversion run from Jerry Parks, who had 78 yards on 12 carries and scored all the points for the B-Team.
