When the pass play broke down, Lyndon’s Shea Kirsop fixed things by using his legs.
He ended up winning the game as well.
On a busted pass play, Kirsop scrambled for a 79-yard touchdown run and the go-ahead score as Lyndon rallied to defeat Northern Heights, 35-28, in Allen.
“That last play, we had him wrapped up eight or 10 times,” Heights co-coach Tad Hatfield said. “We kept missing tackles. Unfortunately, it’s one of those plays you wish you could have back.”
With less than a minute to go, Lyndon coach Rod Stallbaumer said the plan was to get some quick-hitting pass plays to try to move down the field quickly.
Instead, Kirsop did it on his own, breaking numerous tackles before hitting the open field.
The Tigers (2-0) took the win after trailing 21-7 at halftime.
Kade Neilson tied it with 5- and 49-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter before Kirsop’s 2-yard plunge gave Lyndon a 28-21 lead.
Heights’ Kenneth Bronson scored on an 11-yard run, and Stephen Nuessen’s point-after tied it before the dramatic ending.
“We came out after half and let down. We were a little flat,” Hatfield said. “Lyndon was ready to get back at us. They drove the football on us and ran it down our throats for awhile.”
Kirsop finished with 16 carries for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while Neilson had 17 rushes for 129 yards and a pair of scores.
Keene Niemack added 70 yards rushing.
“It’s definitely a big win,” Stallbaumer said. “We’re still coming together while we battle the injury bug. Our younger kids are stepping up.”

Olpe 46, Eureka 0
Olpe got back to its winning ways Friday night with a 46-0 blanking of Eureka in Olpe.
The Eagles’ victory was keyed by a stout defensive effort from Alex Medenciy, who snared three interceptions, and an Olpe offensive attack that produced 279 yards to Eureka’s 92.
It was a good result for first-year coach Chris Schmidt, who earned his first victory as Olpe’s skipper after losing the season opener to Northern Heights a week ago.
“We definitely did some things better,” Schmidt said. “We definitely saw some improvement. It’s a young bunch, and I think they’re learning. Every time we go out, that’s good experience for us.”
Olpe (1-1) got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard run by Josh Lambert in the first quarter that made it 7-0, and then the Eagles exploded for 21 points in the second quarter. Bradley Argabright hauled in a 25-yard pass from Matt Redeker and Lambert scored from 10 yards out to make it 21-0, and then, on the last play of the half, Redeker found tight end Josh Klumpe from 15 yards away to make it 28-0 heading into the break.
“We got off to a better start,” Schmidt said. “Then, in the second and third quarters, we got on a roll. We went to the air and beat them over the top. They were playing tight and we took advantage of that.”
Redeker got in the scoring act when he fell on a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter, and Medenciy and Argabright added runs of 4 and 14 yards, respectively, in the fourth quarter to cap the Eagles’ scoring.
