Local restaurant fined for inspection violation

Saturday, September 8, 2007

Casbah Mediterranean Pizza was fined following inspections by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment on June 20 and July 2.

Mike Heideman, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, stated in a release earlier this week that Casbah at 1127 Commercial St., was fined following the June and July inspections. A letter was sent to the restaurant on Aug. 10 to the restaurant. No information about the amount of the fine was available.

The KDHE’s Web site states that the restaurant was inspected on May 25, 2006 for licensing; Feb. 20 for a routine inspection; June 20 following a complaint and July 2 for a re-inspection as a follow-up to the June 20 inspection.

Heideman said it is KDHE’s policy to re-inspect an establishment if violations aren’t corrected on site while an inspector is present.

“When an inspector documents the same food code violations on consecutive visits to the same establishment, it is KDHE’s policy to issue fines,” he said.

According the KDHE’s Web site, the restaurant was cited for several critical violations on June 20 including:

• Eating, drinking and smoking in designated areas. Critical violation, corrected on site.

• Food shall be safe and honestly presented. Critical violation, corrected on site.

• Cold holding: Food held at 41 degrees. Critical violation, not corrected on site.

• Food held at 41 degrees or less may be dated seven days. Critical violation, corrected on site.

• Food in contact with surfaces of equipment and utensils must be clean to sight and touch. Critical violation, not corrected on site.

• Physical facilities shall be maintained in good repair. Not a critical violation, not corrected on site.

• If pests are found, use methods to control them. Critical violation, corrected on site.

• Poisonous or toxic material shall be used according to the manufacture’s labeled instructions. Critical violation, not corrected on site.

A July 2 inspection yielded violations of the following codes:

• Water pressure provided to all fixtures required to use water. Critical violation, not corrected on site.

• If pests are found, use methods to control them. Critical violation, not corrected on site.

• Premises shall be free of unnecessary items. Not a critical violation, not corrected on site.

• Cleaning shall be done when the least food is exposed. Not a critical violation, not corrected on site.

LOL trebuchet. This place always looked like it was closed up tight and empty. "Critical violation" sounds really bad. I wonder what kind of food they serve? Maybe food service is only a cover. I wonder who owns the building. I'd better stop before somebody accuses me of being ethnocentric.

I went there once for a falafel pita...the server didn't know what I was talking about. It's on the parking lot sign!!! It's on the menu!! It's one of the most common Arab foods known to the world!!! That place is just creepy. Glad I didn't get anything to eat.
