From mid-August through Labor Day weekend, Emporia Police officers worked special patrols, watching for and arresting drivers who police said were operating motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Lt. Larry Adams said Emporia Police officers wrote 15 speeding violations, enforced two seat-belt violations for front seat passengers age 4-13, arrested two offenders for DUI and wrote 24 other traffic citations.
The Emporia Police Department received a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to take part in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s campaign, Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest project for 2007.
During the enforcement period, Emporia Police officers also took part in the Interstate 35 Corridor Enforcement on Aug. 30, partnering with agencies in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas.
The officers put in 69.5 hours of overtime, which was paid by the grant, and made a total of 70 traffic stops.
