At the Farmers Market
Members of St. James Missionary Baptist Church of Emporia will bring baked goods to sell Saturday at the Farmers Market at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street.
Tammy Morrow will sell her home baked brownies, along with cakes, pecan pies, fruit pies (some made with Splenda), fruit crisps, muffin, cookies and other treats. Proceeds are used to fund church projects.
Barbecue brisket will be available in sandwiches or in a combo with chips and a beverage. There still are copies for sale of the 75-page Smoky Hill cookbook, which includes some recipes by local cooks.
The market runs from 8 a.m. to noon or until supplies are sold.
Church sale Saturday
The Flint Hills Christian Church is holding a “huge” parking lot sale, beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday at the church, 1836 E. Highway 50. Proceeds will be used for church Youth Summer Bible Retreat.
Items for sale include furniture, antiques, retired collectibles, household goods, brand name clothing, toys, baby items, bedroom outfit, skis, bar stools and much, much more.
The church is east of Mark II Lumber and next door to Budget Host Inn motel.
VFW sale
A garage sale Saturday at the VFW hall, 302 S. Commercial St., will benefit the MS Foundation. The sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. is sponsored by LeLan Dains, whose mother has multiple sclerosis. That knowledge of the autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s central nervous system, led Dains two years ago to ride in his first MS150 Bike Tour. He’s also planning to ride in this year’s tour later this month.
Legion sale, auction
American Legion Post 5 will have a sale and auction starting at 7 a.m. Saturday at the post, 2921 W. 12th Ave. A silent auction will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a live auction of larger items will begin outside at 10 a.m. Refreshments and snacks will be for sale.
Proceeds from the event will be used to support Legion community programs.
Pet adoptions at the market
The H.Dale Buck Animal Welfare Fund will have adoptable cats, kittens, dogs and puppies from 9 to 1 p.m. Saturday at 813 Commercial St. during the Great American Flea Market. To see a complete list of pets available, go to www.buckfund.petfinder.com.
Hospital auxiliary at the market
All money raised from the Newman Regional Health Auxiliary Booth at the Great American Flea Market downtown on Saturday will be donated to the Hospital Auxiliary in Greensburg to assist with recovery efforts. Devastated by a huge tornado, Kiowa County Memorial Hospital is currently operating out of an Air National Guard tent hospital. Booth items include handwork linens, a quilt, Fostoria stemware, collectible dishes and figurines, Indian pottery and art prints, furniture, jewelry, and lots of other treasures.
Cupboard nearly bare
The Salvation Army reports that its Emporia food pantry is almost empty.
“We made it through the summer, just barely, with the help of purchasing food from the food bank,” a news release said.
“Now it is easier to tell you what we have than what we don’t have. We have corn, green beans, chips and, thanks to Tyson, we have frozen chicken. We are out of almost everything else.”

Blood drive Monday and Tuesday
A Red Cross blood drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lee Beran Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave. Call (800) 448-3543 to schedule an appointment. Blood can be donated every 56 days, according to a release about the drive.
On Tuesday, members of My Good Deed and ABATE of Kansas District 12 will jdonate blood to honor the victims, family members, survivors, the rescue and recovery workers and thousands of volunteers who “gave so much on and following Sept. 11.
