• Dancin’ in the street! The Emporia City Commission will consider a request from Emporia Main Street to conduct Emporia State University’s homecoming street dance on Oct. 19 in the parking lot of the 700 block of Merchant Street. Several other items are on the agenda at this weeks’ city commission meeting, which starts at 1:30 p.m. in the Municipal Court Room at 518 Mechanic St.
• Head to the market! The Emporia Farmers Market starts at 5 p.m. in the Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street parking lot.
• Don’t forget your book! The Emporia Public Library will hold a book discussion at 7 p.m. at the library on “The Center of Everything, ” Laura Moriarty’s look at a young girl living with a dysfunctional mother.
Friday
• Get outdoors! Find out great ways to get outdoors during Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply’s annual Wildlife Appreciation and Conservation Days today and Saturday. Local conservation groups will be on hand to provide information and goods.
• Calling Emporia High School classes 1965 to 1968! The reunion for the classes will be today and Saturday at the Eagles Club.
• Tallgrass Pickin’! The Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls will hold a Tallgrass Pickin’ starting at 7:30 p.m.
• Walk to help fight cancer! The annual Relay for Life will be from 6 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Saturday at the Emporia High School track.

• More Emporia Farmers Market! The farmers market will start at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street. Today’s is the last of the 2007 Murphy’s Menu/Learning Connection Cook-Offs. Just bring your best pumpkin dish and a recipe for it.
• Calling scrapbookers! The Scrapbookers Scramble will start at 10 a.m. at the Flinthills Mall.
• Goods, goods and more goods! The Great American Market will start at 7 a.m. in downtown Emporia. The market will include everything from goods for purchase, the annual Chalk Fest, car show, food and more!
• Soccer fans! Emporia State University hosts Fall Tourney I at Trusler Sports Complex, and at 2 p.m. ESU soccer will vie against Washburn at TRYSA Sports Complex.
• Indians and bison. Learn about American Indians and bison at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City.
• The 10th annual H.O.T.T. Fiesta in Las Casitas Park kicks off with a concert from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Sunday
• Come to the porch! The William Allen White Community Partnership will hold “Signing on the Porch” at 2 p.m. at the William Allen White Historical Site in Emporia.
• The bulk of the 10th annual H.O.T.T. Fiesta in Las Casitas Park is today, starting with a parade at 11:30 a.m. from the corners of Constitution Street and West South Avenue. Food booths and colorful dancers always are a hit, and contests include jalapeno eating and a tortilla toss. Proceeds benefit scholarships for Emporia High Hispanic graduates.
