The start of the school year found students and staff in Southern Lyon County reaping the benefits of new equipment purchased with a $13,000 grant.
The Flint Hills Youth Charitable Foundation donated $13,100 in December 2006 to Southern Lyon County. Michael Argabright, Southern Lyon County superintendent, said the funds were split up among the four buildings in the district to purchase equipment.
Neosho Rapids and Olpe elementary schools received laptop computers for classroom use. The Neosho Rapids school also received a defibrillator and oxygen tank, which is kept in the office area and is on hand for school functions and events.
Hartford High and Olpe Junior and Senior High schools received PowerPoint projectors for multimedia presentations in the classrooms by students and staff as well as a defibrillator and oxygen tank.
“All the equipment was purchased and delivered to all buildings for the beginning of the school year,” Argabright said. “Selected faculty and staff were trained last summer as first-responders in each building on first aid and use of the defibrillators.”
Argabright said the school district is grateful for the gift.
“Southern Lyon County School USD 252 and the communities of Olpe, Hartford and Neosho Rapids want to extend their appreciation towards the Flint Hills Charitable Foundation for their contribution towards the welfare of our students, staff and patrons,” he said. “The equipment will be available to all students in the district and the defibrillators will be available at all functions for students, staff, patrons and visitors to our facilities.”
The Southern Lyon County Education Foundation also has received contributions from the Emil Babinger Trust to be used in the libraries and the Loretto A. Langley Charitable Trust to be used to toward the purchase of bleachers, Argabright added.
“Many district alumni have also donated money for a number of scholarships and projects along with several memorial contributions,” Argabright said.
