For sale: Absolute Trucking building

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Construction has been halted on a 10,000-square-foot building west of the city that had been planned eventually to provide work for about 300 employees. The building, at West Highway 50 and Road D, now is for sale.

Absolute Trucking, based in Phoenix, had announced in late March that the company intended to expand in Emporia, with a new building that would house dispatch, maintenance and trucks to serve Absolute’s customers nationwide.

“Plans have changed,” owner Mike DeMore said in a telephone interview Friday afternoon. “...It did not come to fruition and therefore the building is currently for sale.”

Absolute Trucking continues to operate out of its Phoenix headquarters, DeMore said.

Earlier this year, the company had advertised for job applicants in Emporia and other areas of the country.

The new building was expected to be operational in late June, if weather cooperated. Mitchell-Markowitz Builders was contractor for the project.

K.B. Thomas of American Real Estate has the property listed for sale. It includes the building and 20 acres, located about two miles west of Deer Trail Implement.

If the building is finished, Thomas said, owners will ask $799,000. Offers also will be taken on the building as it currently sits, unfinished.

Emporian Ron McCoy had been working in Emporia as an agent for the brokerage side of Absolute and also was running its trucking operations. He has resigned, DeMore said.
