Rossbach opens season with 2nd-place finish at Bob Timmons Invite

Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach started her season off well, finishing second at the Bob Timmons Invitational in Lawrence on Saturday.

Rossbach’s time of 22:22.16 in the 6K put her behind only Oral Roberts’ Faithy Kamangila in a race that featured mostly Division-I runners.

Morgan Frehe (25:48.76) was the next-highest finisher for ESU, taking 48th. Chelsea Clanton (51st), Kathryn Davison (60th), Kylie Bookout (67th) and Tiffany Baum (68th) rounded out the Hornets’ top six.

The ESU women finished with 203 points, taking eighth place out of 12 teams.

On the men’s side, Emporia native Skyler Delmott had the best showing, finishing sixth in the 8K with a time of 26:10.03.

Fellow EHS grad Brock Ternes (27:41.76) took 29th, while Marcus Summers (27:51.11) was 34th.

The Hornets’ 163 points were good for eighth out of 13 men’s teams.

ESU’s next action will come in the Missouri Southern Stampede on Sept. 15.

ESU volleyball bounces back at MWSU Invite

The Emporia State volleyball rebounded from two losses Friday night to take a pair of victories Saturday at the Missouri Western Invitational.

ESU defeated Ouachita Baptist 30-27, 30-23, 30-19, before taking down Cameron 30-28, 30-19, 30-21.

Arica Shepard and Mary Walczuk paced the Hornets in Match One, posting 15 kills each. Brianne Boner notched 11 kills, while Amy Byfield had a team-high nine digs.

Brittney Miller had a breakout match against Cameron, putting down 12 kills with a .529 hitting percentage.

Shepard led the team with 16 kills, while Megan Koster hit double figures with 11.

Byfield contributed 19 digs.

ESU (6-2) will play its home opener at 7 tonight, taking on Central Missouri.

Hornet soccer falls, 4-3, to Angelo State

The Emporia State soccer team couldn’t overcome a standout performance from Ashley Tatum, falling 4-3 to Angelo State on Saturday in Ada, Okla.

Tatum scored all four goals for the Rambelles.

The teams traded goals before Tatum put in the game-winner in the 89th minute, scoring on a cross from the left side.

ESU’s three tallies was its highest output of the season, as Sarah Tetuan, Caitlin Riemer and Alicia Smith all found the back of the net.

Megan Martin added eight saves for the Hornets.

ESU (0-4) will play host to rival Washburn at 2 p.m. Saturday at the TRYSA soccer fields.
