The Eureka Herald reported that Scott D. Cheever, 25, will face first-degree murder charges relating to the shooting death of former Greenwood County Sheriff Matthew Samuels. The trial is scheduled to be held in the District Court of Greenwood County in Eureka. Samuels was killed on Jan. 19, 2005, while attempting to serve a warrant at a rural home in an area known as Hilltop, about six miles northwest of Virgil.
Jury selection is expected to start on Oct. 2 and the opening statements are scheduled for Oct. 15.
Chase County
The Chase County Board of County Commissioners and Chase County Registrar Kathy Swift discussed options available following the resignation of Deputy Registrar Betty Ann Yeager.
The Chase County Leader-News reported that the board and Swift discussed whether Yeager’s replacement would be a part-time deputy or continue full time as the deputy and floater. Commissioner Rick Griffin encouraged Swift to seek applicants for the position and then, based on the applicants, determine whether the position would be full or part-time.
