EHS girls Tennis takes 3rd at Junction City

Saturday, September 1, 2007

A trip this weekend to the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York forced a scheduling change for the Emporia High girls tennis team, as the Lady Spartans traveled to the Junction City Quad on Thursday and finished third.

The top finisher for EHS was Whitney Page at the No. 2 singles spot. Page finished with a 2-1 record at the quad, picking up victories over Manhattan’s Xioaru Chen, 8-4, and Junction City’s Lindsay Roberts, 8-5, before falling in her last match to Salina South’s Megan Quinley, 8-1.

Emporia High placed third at the other three positions — No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles.

Amanda Roberts won her opening match at No. 1 singles with an 8-1 victory over Manhattan’s Taylor Manges. However, Roberts dropped her final two matches, falling to Junction City’s Dani Hoover, 8-0, and Salina South’s Jill Robl, 8-1.

Sarah Watkins and Lauren Kitchens formed the No. 1 doubles pair for the Lady Spartans, and after an opening-round 8-1 setback to Manhattan’s Andrea Kruse and Katie James, the EHS duo came back to defeat Ashley Goudey and Breanna Rovenstine of Junction City, 8-5. However, Watkins and Kitchens fell in their final match, 8-4, to the South team of Tia Irwin and Carolyn Fox.

At the No. 2 doubles position for EHS was Kaitlin Pedersen and Jordan Sosa, and after opening the quad with an 8-0 victory over Rachel Quinn and Stevie Nitschke of Manhattan, Pedersen and Sosa dropped their final two matches by identical 8-6 scores to Sharon Glaser and Moly Stuckey of Junction City and Meredith Holman and Kyla Alton of Salina South.

Salina South came away with the team title with nine points, Junction City finished second with eight points, Emporia totaled five points and Manhattan ended with two.

After its trip to New York, EHS will be back in action at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 when it plays hosts to the Emporia Invitational at the Emporia High tennis courts.
