Here comes Christmas

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

TONIGHT, Emporia neighborhoods will be filled with ghosts and goblins going door to door looking for tasty treats.

That means the mad rush into the holiday season will begin tomorrow. It is hard to believe that before too long, we will be eating turkey, opening Christmas presents and toasting the New Year.

Area retailers are already helping us think about Christmas. Many have their Christmas trees, decorations and suggested gifts for sale.

Typically, The Gazette likes to remind people around Thanksgiving about shopping locally. However, with the holiday displays already up, we thought we should get our message out a little sooner.

As the holiday season progresses, we hope people will support our community by shopping Emporia first. When you shop locally, the money benefits not only the retailers but also the community. Our local stores have much to offer, so take time and do some exploring.

For local retailers, we hope they will reach out to the community by letting customers know what goods they have and offering competitive prices.

As the busy holiday season approaches, why not get a jump on the season by picking your gifts at our local stores?

Happy Holidays! Only 55 days until Christmas.

I keep hearing to 'shop Emporia first'. I WONDER if the local business owners are/will also be shopping Emporia first or will they be traveling else where for better prices and selection.

Do you 100% support the Emporia retailers?

I haven't left town in over a year. What I can't find locally, however, I find online. I have often found that local retailers will order what you want if they don't have it. Waters has been great about that, and so has Reebles and Mark II.
The one thing I wish we had was a really good bread store, but it seems Amanda's may hit the spot for that. I read where all you have to do is call one day ahead for a loaf of bread. The Asian Market on Merchant Street has really good french bread, and they too will special order whatever you want.

I like supporting Emporia. Although I was not born and raised here, I chose to live here 30 years ago. It is much less expensive to live here than where I was born and raised. My kids spent their childhoods here, and even though they have gone to seek their fortunes elsewhere where the $$$ is, I'm here because people are friendly, traffic is nearly non-existent, and I feel safe. Those are good reasons to support local businesses.

With the price of gas going up again, we should all think of shopping Emporia first. Even if you might get a better price in a bigger city, you probably won't save by the time you figure the gas costs. Waters has been really good to special order and I already found my Christmas tree there. I did look in Hobby Lobby in Manhattan and at several other stores but thought Waters had the nicest and was priced lower than Hobby Lobby. OK, I admit to buying out of town sometimes, but only if I'm already out of town for another reason. I don't go just to shop. There are many nice stores in Emporia and they need our support. Since the mall is renovating, does anyone know what new shops might be going in there? I know Sears moved into the mall but I've been told that service has to come from Topeka. I hope they can have their own service dept. soon. So when shopping don't forget to add in the price of gas or carpool. Happy Holidays!
