Following a train derailment near Saffordville Monday morning, a BNSF Railway official speaks about the incident, which involved 24 cars.
Steve Forsberg, spokesperson for BNSF Railway, said the derailment occurred about 8:45 a.m. Monday and involved a merchandise train that was on its way to Illinois from California. There were a total of 106 cars on the train being pulled by two locomotives.
All but one of the 24 cars that derailed was carrying wine and champagne, Forsberg said.
“The one that wasn’t carrying wine and champagne was carrying canned fruit,” Forsberg said.
Forsberg said some of the wine did spill into a non-running water way but contractors were sent out to clean it up.
The track was reopened for service at 12:28 a.m. Tuesday.
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

Wanderer, sometimes it gets real, real quiet as I read, read, read comments. Then I run into one like yours and burst out laughing really loud. The cat, dozing nearby in a puddle of sunbeam on the floor jumped up and tore out of the room. Good one!!!
