It might seem like a harmless “prank” to some, but throwing pumpkins — or any other object — off a highway overpass might land the offender in jail.
Three teenagers were arrested Sunday and accused of throwing a pumpkin from a bridge onto the Kansas Turnpike near Emporia.
Assistant County Attorney Amy Aranda said this morning that throwing pumpkins or any object off a bridge is a Class B misdemeanor in Kansas and is punishable by up to six months in county jail and a fine of $1,000.
Just damaging someone else’s pumpkin is a crime, too.
“I guess if somebody just vandalized somebody’s pumpkin technically it’s criminal damage to property,” Aranda said.
Criminal damage to property carries the same penalties, Aranda said.

We drove under that bridge Saturday morning and saw more than one pumpkin smashed on the highway.
