Saffordville — Twenty to 25 cars of a BNSF Railway freight train derailed between Strong City and Saffordville around 9 a.m. Monday, according to a nearby resident. No injuries were reported in the accident.
BNSF representatives did not return calls this morning.
Cheryl Jahnke, who lives across the road from where the derailment happened, said she was asleep in her home when the cars derailed but she said her husband and children heard the cars derail.
“There were between 20 to 25 rail cars derailed and several appeared to be damaged beyond repair,” she said. “I was told by one Santa Fe worker that the freight cars were carrying assorted wines.”
Jahnke said railroad crews had been working to clear the wreckage and were still working at 12:35 a.m. today, when several freight cars were still on the ground.
“Right now, they have the field where the cars landed lit up like a football field,” Jahnke said in an e-mail early this morning. “Very impressive hard work!”
Jahnke said the transcontinental main line was open and running this morning.
“But railway from Strong City to Saffordville is down with a lot of hard work needed before it can be functional again,” she said.

That is too bad, what a waste of good wine. Too bad it wasn't 20 of the freight cars that say CHINA on the side.
