Nichols earns State bid on bars

Senior Tarra Nichols is the lone State qualifier for the Emporia High gymnastics squad, as she finished fifth in the uneven parallel bars event at Saturday’s Regional meet at Emporia High.
Nichols finished with a score of 8.525 in her specialty event, which was enough to earn her a bid to the State meet next Saturday.
The Emporia High squad finished sixth out of seven teams, ending the day with a score of 90.00 to finish ahead of Hutchinson (88.20). Olathe South won the team title, finishing with a score of 102.475.
Nichols also was Emporia’s highest finisher in the All-Around competition, coming in eighth place with a score of 32.475. Olathe South’s Alyson Ramsey won the All-Around title with a 36.150. Senior Hayley Fry was Emporia’s other All-Around competitor, and she finished 14th with a score of 30.850.
Nichols led the way for EHS on the vault, finishing in a tie for 10th with a 8.50. Fry was 20th with an 8.20, while Jamie Hollern was 30th (7.70), Haley Risley was 31st (7.55) and Kayla Baker was 32nd (7.30).
On the bars, Fry was Emporia’s next highest finisher after Nichols, placing 20th with a 7.05. Calle Arndt was 28th (4.225), Kristina McAuley was 29th (3.825) and Risley was 30th (3.025).
Fry paced Emporia on the balance beam, coming in 12th with a score of 7.85, while Nichols tied for 21st with a score of 7.250. Hollern was 24th with a 7.00, while Baker came in 31st (5.95) and Kelsey Downs finished 32nd (5.45).
On the floor exercise, Nichols garnered another top-10 finish, placing 10th with an 8.20. Jennie Loucks and Fry were part of a three-way tie for 17th with scores of 7.750. Hollern finished 23rd (7.650) and Arndt came in 30th (7.00).
