Boy Scouts need your help
Monday, October 29, 2007
TOPEKA, October 29, 2007 – The Jayhawk Area Council and Boy Scout Councils across the country are asking Americans to join “Operation Popcorn” to show their support of America’s troops serving all over the world. Through the program, civilians can donate $25 of Trail’s End popcorn products to active duty troops and their families during the Boy Scouts’ annual popcorn sale this fall.
The Boy Scouts are hoping to have 300,000 donations before the end of December, which would translate to approximately 750 tons – 50 tractor-trailer loads - of popcorn treats. The Scouts have partnered with SupportOurTroops.org to deliver the popcorn to military bases, ships and aircraft carriers all around the world.
“A lot of troops are former Boy Scouts, or have family members and friends who are Boy Scouts, so they look forward to the annual popcorn sale and special popcorn treats,” said Martin C. Boire of SupportOurTroops.org. “We’re thrilled that the Boy Scouts are offering Americans the opportunity to give the troops a taste of home.”
An initial shipment of more than 35 tons of popcorn has already gone to Navy Sailors and Marines stationed in the Pacific Ocean, transported by the USNS Flint, a 564-foot ammunition ship. Each case of product shipped comes with a thank-you card to the troops, provided by the Scouts. A second shipment – this time more than 700 tons if the Scouts meet their goal – will be sent to troops around the entire world at the end of the sale in December.
Every year Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts across America sell popcorn door-to-door to raise money for Scouting. Money raised from the sale remains with local Scout councils, and funds activities like camping and field trips.
For those that have missed the opportunity to purchase from their local Scouts purchases and donations can be made by visiting www.orderpopcorn.com.
