Olpe, 4 Other Area Schools Earn Trips to State Tournament

Friday, October 26, 2007

Matt Redeker ran for two second-half touchdowns to help lift the Olpe Eagles past Peabody, 14-10, in the regular-season finale in Olpe.

Down 10-0 at the half, the Eagles turned to a spread offense in the second half to try and wear down Peabody, eventually opening up the field enough for Redeker to score on TD runs of 19 and nine yards.

“We had to spread it out, because we were getting nothing going on the ground,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “We came out in the second half and chipped away and got field position and finally broke through. They had to chase us and run with us a lot, and I think we wore them out, and Matt then got those two big runs for us.”

Peabody took a 10-point advantage into the half thanks to an opening drive that ended with a 37-yard field goal by Will Pratt and then a second-quarter interception return for a touchdown by Ben Eldridge off a Redeker pass.

“As soon as he (Redeker) threw that ball, he knew it was a mistake,” Schmidt said.

Meanwhile, Peabody’s defense blanked the Eagles for most of the first half, though Olpe did show some signs of life late in the second quarter that gave the team some hope heading into the locker room.

“In the first half, they were just whipping us,” Schmidt said. “We got inside the 20 a couple times but hurt ourselves with penalties and such. But the big thing was the kids got some confidence in the last few minutes of the half.”

After halftime, it was the Olpe defense’s turn to shut down Peabody while the Eagles got enough offense from their quarterback to earn the victory.

With the victory, Olpe enters the State playoffs with a 6-3 record and will play host to Canton-Galva on Tuesday night in Olpe in the first round of the playoffs.

MdCV 62, Elwood 42

Friday night marked a turning point in Marais des Cygnes Valley football history, as for the first time in 20 years, the Trojans made it into the State playoffs.

The success wasn’t easy to come by, either.

Coming out of the first quarter down by six points, the Trojans fought back to take a four-point lead into halftime, 24-20. The Trojans maintained their lead the rest of the way thanks in part to 24 third-quarter points.

The Trojans’ victory was perhaps made even more impressive since they were forced to change their strategy for because of an injury to senior running back Chisom Spencer. With the change, the Trojans ran far more trick plays and it gave some other other players a chance to step-up their game, coach Trenton Douglas said.

“It was really a team effort,” MdCV coach Trenton Douglas said. “Most nights we give the ball to Spencer but he was hurt so we had a lot contribution from everyone.”

Pat Rager ended the game with 20 rushes for 88 yards. Drew Woodruff also rushed five times for 95 yards.

Flinthills 40, Udall 30

The Flinthills Mustangs scored 33 straight points to help turn a 22-0 first-quarter deficit into a 40-30 victory over Udall Thursday night in Rosalia.

After Udall scored on three touchdown passes from quarterback Skylor Kistler to go up 22-0 to open the game, Flinthills came roaring back, thanks in large part to three TD passes by Mustangs quarterback Micah Womacks.

Womacks tossed scores to Shae Roberts, Kent Riemann and Caleb Keplar to pull Flinthills to within three at 22-19 before halftime.

Then a touchdown run by Josh Brown with 28 seconds left in the third quarter gave Flinthills its first lead, and Roberts helped extend that lead to 33-22 with his own TD run with 4:54 left in the game.

Udall scored once more to draw to within three again at 33-30, but the Mustangs responded with Womacks’ fourth TD pass of the night, this one to Preston Hefton, with 1:25 left to ice the game.

All told, Womacks was 10-for-20 for 170 yards and four TDs with two interceptions on the night. Brown led Flinthills with 13 rushes for 77 yards and a touchdown.
