Raising money for St. Jude’s
Employees at Kwik Shop, 102 W. 12th Ave., have created specials to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
On Friday, from 7 to 9 a.m. customers can get a 16-ounce coffee or refill and a doughnut for a $1 donation. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a $1 donation will get a hot dog and 32-ounce fountain drink or refill. And from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., clerks will pump gas for customers for a $1 donation.
Gas also will be pumped from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday for a $1 donation.
Toys for Tots
The UPS Store, 2326 Industrial Road, in conjunction with the UPS locations across the country, has joined the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Toys for Tots, will have a “60 Days of Giving” in-store campaign to raise money for children in need. From Friday through Dec. 24, the UPS store will sell commemorative Toys for Tots donation cards for $1 each, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Toys for Tots campaign. The UPS store is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 343-8771.
Moundridge supper
The Moundridge Community Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the school house. Those attending are to bring a covered dish; beverages will be provided. Entertainment will be provided by Bruce Hoover and Virginia Shaw.
Hauntings
• The Neosho Rapids Lions Club Haunted House will be open Friday and Saturday. The evening begins with concessions at 6 p.m. at the Neosho Rapids Community Center. Hayrack rides to the house begin at approximately 8 p.m. The cost for a ticket is $7, with $1 off with a canned food donation. For more information, call Dorothy at 342-4313.
• The Haunted Trail, east of Emporia on Highway 170, leads to the Haunted Forest at Camp Alexander, which is open from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday (this is the final weekend). Admission is $7 each person or $6 if a canned good is brought for the Salvation Army. For more information, call 343-5595.
Harvest supper & auction
Saffordville United Methodist Chruch will serve its Harvest Supper at 6 p.m. Saturday at Saffordville School west of Emporia on U.S. Highway 50. The menu includes chicken and noodles, meatballs, vegetables, salads, rolls, pies and costs $7.50 at the door. There also will be an auction of crafts, baked goods, and speciality baskets. Proceeds help finance church activities.
Fall dinner in Admire
The Admire United Methodist Church will have the annual Fall Harvest Dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes ham balls, cheesy potatoes, seasoned green beans, salad, rolls, fresh-baked pie, tea and coffee. A free-will offering will be accepted. There also will be a Bazaar with baked items and knick knacks for sale.
East-Side Fish Fry
Fried catfish and a host of side dishes will be offered from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Emporia Recreation Center, 313 West Fourth Ave. Proceeds from the meal will benefit the Emporia East-Side Community Group.
A full catfish dinner — fish, spaghetti, coleslaw, cornbread, corn on the cob, dessert, and a beverage — will cost $7 per plate in advance or $7.50 at the door. Senior citizens’ meals will be $6 each. Individual side dishes of each item also will be sold. A side of fish or spaghetti will be $2 each; desserts, $1; cole slaw or corn on the cob, 75 cents; and cornbread or beverage, 50 cents.

Food for pantry
Members of the First United Methodist Church will dress in costume Sunday and go “trick or treating” from 4 to 6 p.m. for food for the Salvation Army pantry.
Music festival
The Grace United Methodist Church will have the Simple Gifts Music Festival at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Performing will be the EHS Chorale, ESU A Cappella Choir and Harmonious Voices of Praise Voices of Grace, tuba and euphonium ensemble, bass guitar duet and “mystery artist” on saxophone said the press release.
Fall festival
The First Church of the Nazarene will have a Fall Festival from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Potter-Beath Activity Center. The Youth Group will sell corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages as a fundraiser for church projects. There also will be games for the trick-or-treaters to play.
Pancakes for school
The Emporia Christian School will have the 14th annual Pancake Feed from 7 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 at the Anderson building on the Lyon County fairgrounds. Advance tickets are a donation of $5 for each adult; $3 for children three to 12 years. At the door, $5.50 and $3.50. Tickets are available from ECS students or at the ECS office, 1325 C of E Drive. Proceeds will be used to purchase playground equipment.
