Rhonda Moreland of Americus was elected president of the state consumer council on Friday at a meeting Friday of the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Kansas organization at Hesston.
“And because of that, I’m automatically on the state board of NAMI,” Moreland said.
She will be a representative of Kansas at the group’s national meeting in December in New Orleans and in Orlando, Fla., in June 2008. She has been trained by NAMI-Kansas to work with the support group for consumers of mental-health services.
Moreland, who was diagnosed as bipolar 12 years ago, helped organize the local chapter of NAMI this spring. The group is for people who receive mental health services, and for their families as well. A membership drive for that group will begin Nov. 2.
“There was no group for me,” Moreland said. “I want to make sure as president that somehow everybody has knowledge of NAMI-Kansas, and that’s my goal.”
More information may be had by calling her at (620) 794-7163.
