Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach etched her name into the MIAA record books one more time at the MIAA Championships on Saturday at Kirksville, Mo.
The senior won the conference championship for the second straight year, taking a convincing victory with a time of 22:06.65 — more than 35 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
“It was a great run by Jonel to win her second consecutive MIAA individual championship,” ESU coach Dave Harris said. “She was in control the whole way. She chose not to lead until just past the halfway mark and then pulled away.”
Rossbach is the ninth woman in MIAA history to win two MIAA cross country championships.
On the men’s side, Skyler Delmott earned All-MIAA honors with a seventh-place finish, helping to lead the Hornets to fourth place out of eight MIAA teams.
The men met their goal of finishing in the upper half of the MIAA after taking last in the conference a year ago.
Delmott, who finished in a time of 26:35.73, had the highest finish by a Hornet since Ryan Weston took fifth in 2004.
Fellow Emporia High graduate Brock Ternes was right behind Delmott, taking 13th.
“I thought Brock Ternes,” Harris said, “ran his best race ever in an ESU uniform.”
Ternes and Sloane Kern (19th) both earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors.
Kern also took the MIAA’s inaugural Cross Country Freshman of the Year award with his 19th-place showing.
Eric Wellman added a 22nd-place effort in his final MIAA Championships.
The ESU women finished last out of eight MIAA teams. Kylie Bookout (32nd, 25:14.79) was the Hornets’ second runner.
“The women had a tough time with the strategy of running with Truman,” Harris said. “We beat them at our home meet, but with the meet at their course, they prevailed.
“With six freshmen on the women’s team, we have a chance to get much better in the future.”
Both the men and women will compete at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Nov. 3 in Joplin, Mo.
