Olpe volleyball makes State tourney for 2nd year in a row

The Olpe volleyball team is headed to the State tournament for the second consecutive year after winning its Sub-State bracket at Olpe on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles (28-6) swept both matches on the day. Match No. 1 saw Olpe take out Caldwell, 25-12, 25-20. With a chance to go to State on the line in Match Two, the Lady Eagles blew by Southern Coffey County in straight games, 25-11, 25-13.
The Class 1A State tournament will take place Friday and Saturday in Hays. In pool play on Friday, Olpe will begin with Central Christian at 9:30 a.m., and then will take on Centralia at 10:30 a.m. and Hoxie at 1:30 p.m. Should the fifth-seeded Lady Eagles advance to bracket play, the semifinals begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the championship and third-place matches scheduled to begin 25 minutes after the semifinals are completed.
Also at Olpe on Saturday, the Waverly volleyball team fell one match shy of the State tournament, getting past Dexter in the first match, 2-0 (25-18, 25-22), before falling to the top-seed, Central Christian, in two games, 25-18, 25-17.
Waverly ended its season with a 24-9 record.
In Class 2A action at Lyndon, the Lyndon volleyball team could not cap its strong season with a trip to the State tournament, losing in the championship game of Sub-State to St. Marys.
St. Marys, the No. 1 seed, took out Lyndon in straight sets, 25-14, 25-13. Before that, Lyndon had defeated Wathena and Alma-Wabaunsee each in two games.
Lyndon finished its season with a 31-5 record.
Lebo lost its first match of the day to Alma-Wabaunsee, 25-11, 25-21, ending the Lady Wolves’ season with a 21-10 record.
At the Class 3A Sub-State at Osage City, Northern Heights won its first match against Central Heights, 2-1, before falling to Wellsville in two games, 25-17, 25-19. Heights ended with a 13-23 record.
Olpe boys and girls cross country teams each make it to State
The Olpe boys and girls cross country teams each qualified for the State meet.
The Olpe girls won the team title with 21 points, edging past second-place Burrton by two points.
The Lady Eagles’ Sharon Zeller won the individual title on the girls side, finishing the girls 4-kilometer course in a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds, beating Burrton’s Maria Fernandez by seven seconds. Olpe also got medalist performances from Katelyn Henderson (3rd, 16:40) and Nicole Wendling (7th, 17:34).
For the Olpe boys, Colby Nuessen finished fourth in a time of 18:56 on the 5K course to lead the Eagles to a second-place team finish with 29 points, while Stafford won the team title with 18 points. Ethan Hall (19:27) and Trey Stead (19:32) also medaled for Olpe with eighth- and ninth-place finishes, respectively.
Also on the girls side, Madison’s Adrian McCollum qualified for the State meet individually with a ninth-place finish in a time of 17:38.
The Class 1A State meet will be Saturday at the Wamego Country Club in Wamego. The 1A boys will race at 9:30 a.m., while the 1A girls race will begin at 10:30 a.m.
In Class 3A action at Mound City, the Northern Heights boys barely missed out on the State meet, placing fourth with 95 points, just five points behind third-place Central Heights.
Heights did pick up two individual qualifiers on the boys side, as Pete Symmonds and Chris Seemater each finished in the top 10. Symmonds placed sixth in a time of 17:12, while Seemater was ninth in a time of 17:24.
On the girls side, Amy Lee was the top finisher for Heights, placing 13th (17:30). Gesina Miller was 16th (17:53).
The Class 3A boys meet also is at Wamego, with the 3A boys race scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
