The search for a new Emporia police chief hasn’t been going as fast as officials would like, but if all goes well, a selection could be made by the first full week in November.
Emporia has had a lengthy wait for a new police chief. Former Chief Mike Heffron retired in December 2006. Emporia City Manager Matthew Zimmerman said many things that are important to the community had came up and had to be taken care of, delaying the search.
Zimmerman, who accepted the city manager position in March of this year, said Friday morning the field for a new chief has been narrowed to 13 candidates. From these 13, six to seven candidates will be chosen and interviews of those candidates should take place within the next seven to 10 days.
