THE FLINT HILLS Community Health Center, which practiced a mass vaccinations at a flu-shot clinic at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. The exercise was to prepare emergency personnel for a pandemic outbreak of disease or other disaster. During the nine-hour exercise, 1,584 people were vaccinated.
- Jose Eyma, who is a new psychiatrist for the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas. He specializes in children and adolescents.
- Emporia sixth-grade students who raised more than $14,600 to support drug-prevention programs. Lowther North Intermediate School and Sacred Heart Catholic School raised $14,647.
- Ben and Kay Lane, who gave $100,000 to Emporia State University to support the school’s new engraving arts program.
- Lisa Brumbaugh, who was selected as the 2007 State Star of the Kansas Small Business Development Center Network. Brumbaugh, who is director of the Small Business Center at ESU, received the award for her extraordinary commitment to the small-business community.
- The Gazette’s own Bobbi Mlynar, who has been selected to be part of the United States Attorney’s Citizens Academy. This is the first time the academy has been offered.
- Emporia Main Street, Flint Hills Technical College and the Town Crier Bookstore, which received the Governor’s Award of Excellence on Main Street in recognition for their efforts toward downtown development and revitalization.
- Betty Senn, who has been hired as the new director of the Convention & Visitors Bureau.
- U.S. Cellular, which gave a $10,000 grant to the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia. The money will be used to improve the signage around the zoo.
